Home Care living generally offers the most independence and familiarity for seniors. Often 75% of those living in their own homes have care provided by family members. This may be supplemented by government-funded services provided by Home & Community Care Support Services
Retirement living or Independent living is available for those who require limited support for their living and care needs. While external care needs can be coordinated for a fee, there are no “services” included in retirement living spaces, which in many cases are retirement apartments.
Supportive living is what most people consider “retirement homes” such as ExtendiCare, Chartwell, Revera etc. It can be similar to independent living but in a large residence environment with added services available for purchase. Appropriate for those with varying/changing care needs.
Assisted living services provide housing, hospitality services and personal care services for adults who can live independently and make decisions on their own behalf but require a supportive environment due to physical and functional health challenges. Additional services are fee based.
Memory care homes are specifically designed for those suffering from memory loss such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. They operate with a structured environment and offer programming to support positive cognitive skills.
Long Term Care Supports individuals with more complex health needs whose care cannot be safely provided in their own home, or in designated supportive living. If you require assistance determining which long term care facilities to choose, from the list provided by the HCCSS (LHIN), we are happy to help.
